Just another hot day in the Big Apple… Have you ever felt the need to escape the grey office on a hot Friday? Well, girls, I am sure you all did, especially when you had a tight deadline just before the weekend or when the annoying sound of the fax machine and the constant ring of the phone seemed unstoppable. 

   I am no exception, I must tell you.   But last Friday I have decided to do something about it and call off the day earlier.  What next? I found myself drawn uncontrollably by the beach. And not just any beach. The Miami Beach.  I thought that would be the perfect getaway to release some of the work stress and take a break from all the daily routine.  I was planning some serious “remise-en-forme”, how the French say it, or simply to “get back in shape” and rediscover my feminine side which was somehow lost in the daily routine. 

   The thing is I didn’t felt like hiding under my umbrella either, even if I am not one of those gorgeous models lying on the Miami Beach.  I was decided to live life to the max and I wasn’t going to do any compromises at all.  I wanted to look and feel like one of those divas or models: glamorous, mysterious and sexy.  Wishful thinking? Maybe not, if you have the right outfit for a day on the Miami Beach.  Actually this gets me to what I wanted to tell you in the first place.  I spend the most amazing weekend on the Miami Beach with nothing but a couple of swim suites from Diva Bikini.  Well, girls, that was definitely an experience you want to share with your friends! This is the reason why…

   I must admit from the beginning: I am not like one of those skinny models walking around on the Miami Beach like they do on the runway, not even close!    After a good swim and seven more phone numbers in my agenda, I decide to go for an afternoon sleep.  Now let’s turn on the page… This time, imagine me in the hottest beach club in Miami.  Sounds very…cool, isn’t it?

You may be asking, “How does my child know that they are loved when I punish them?”  Children know because they only feel safe and secure when given appropriate boundaries. Let me just say here and now that I am not referring to physical punishment; when I use the word “punishment” I am talking about anything that is giving your child a consequence for an action that you disapprove of.

We all know how hard it is to find the right balance between discipline and independence, especially as there are many parents that feel the need to control their kids and impose their authority.  Many of the measures we take to discipline our children are resented by kids as a limitation of their rights and freedom.  Remember that an exaggerated focus on any of those sides, excessive discipline or unlimited independence can damage your child.

Therefore, you should concentrate on giving consequences for important things; things that will help your child learn more about life, but do everything with measure. In addition, try not to limit your child’s independence. ·        A prime example is my nine year old daughter this morning. She was dawdling and playing with her dolls instead of getting ready for school. I gave her several reminders but to no avail. So, when it was time to leave for school she wasn’t ready. It was actually pouring with rain. I said goodbye to her and left to drive my other three children to school.

·        Becky ended up walking in the pouring rain (with her umbrella). But that was her choice. No amount of nagging could have spoken to her as clearly as that one simple gesture. She had to suffer the consequence of her poor choice. And I wouldn’t mind betting that next time it is raining she will be ready for school on time.

·        The beauty of this method is that she won’t see me as the disciplinarian, because it was actually Becky that made the poor choice. I offered a ride to school for all children who were ready on time. I didn’t even scold her for not being ready. I simply said to her, “Don’t forget your umbrella, Becky”. Then I left her to finish getting ready by herself.

How powerful do you think this can be if we use it correctly? What is so great about this is that children actually learn to discipline themselves. Once they know the rules and choose to break them, they have chosen the consequence that goes with it. Therefore, it pays to establish rules well so that children are well aware of them. Let them know that certain behaviour comes hand in hand with a certain consequence. Then your job as a parent will be much easier. Then you can stop playing policeman.

It is of utmost importance to ensure that 80% of our interaction with our kids is positive. I know this is easier said than done, but this is crucial to our child’s development. A child who lives constantly with put downs cannot develop into a well functioning person because you are limiting them.

·        Children love rewards and I use a reward box with my four children. Every Friday, when I check their bedrooms to see how tidy they are keeping their room, they get to pick from the prize box. This motivates my children to keep a tidy room so that they can have a pick from the box. My kids even go shopping with me to choose what to put in the box. So they know that it be something worthwhile as they picked it.

This simple thing is a positive reinforcement to try and negate the need for discipline in the first place. Ultimately, it is best if we can prevent bad behaviour, but this is not always possible because children are children, and as such are unpredictable.

It is important to adapt the discipline methods to suit the child’s personality.  For example, if we want to maintain a certain behaviors or form new ones (like when the child doesn’t watch TV for doing the homework), the disciplinary methods can focus on using rewards.  If we deal with problematic behaviors, the best way is to use the methods that focus on the logical consequences of the child’s actions (for example, if the child comes late from school, he is not allowed to watch the favorite cartoons). 

The daily stresses of life adversely impact on today’s parents and sometimes, they can’t seem to be able to find the right resources and patience when dealing with their children who misbehave. Think about that the next time your kid plans to test the limits your patience.  Do you really know how to deal with this sort of situation? Some parents don’t feel comfortable when they have to use a disciplinary method, regardless the method. Other parents ask themselves if the method is actually going to give results; still others choose not to use any discipline. Then there are parents who chose to use extreme measures, without considering the long term implications of their actions in the future development of their children:

The power – assertive discipline (including spanking or other physical form of punishment, withdrawal of privileges, threats of punishment) will cause children to respond to their parent’s requests with fear, rather than respect.  Kids will try to conform to their parent’s expectation in order to avoid punishment.

There are probably few parents that were never tempted to use spanking or any other physical form of punishment in order to discipline their kids.  We hope that there are fewer that have actually done it, but we all know this is not true.  The raw facts are that too many parents use physical correction as a method to discipline their kids.  The truth is, however, that most parents who smack their children do it simply because they don’t know another way that works.

The truth? Indeed, in the short term spanking or slapping can give results, but there are serious consequences. Not only may the child receive bruises but they will learn that it is OK to use violence in order to impose authority.

Here are negative implications of smacking your child. Ultimately, it is up to each parent to choose for themselves. I can only inform you.

1.    Spanking your child may damage their relationship with you.  It may destroy the trust and closeness you have worked so hard to build, causing your child to fear you and become angry

2.    Physical punishment can also damage your child’s mental health. It may cause your child to lose their confidence and become depressed

3.    Moral development can be affected and the child can lose their empathy for others

4.    Increased aggressive behavior

5.    There is an association between future child delinquency and antisocial  behaviour

The above are merely facts to inform you so that you can make a wise choice regarding your child. Many parents still choose to use smacking as a discipline method, and regardless of the pressure you may feel from society, I believe that every parent makes the choice that they believe will be best for their child. No parent intentionally inflicts pain on their child.

For those parents who choose to use smacking as a discipline method, allow me suggest that smacking be used as a last resort in your strategies. Use it when you have exhausted every other avenue possible. But the main key here that I MUST emphasize is that if you choose this method, YOU MUST NEVER SMACKL A CHILD WHEN YOU ARE ANGRY!!!

   I thought I could break the ice with a hot subject among the parents with troubled teens: Ready to control a defiant teenager?  Here is a special step – by-step guide on how to deal with troubled teenagers.

   Last time you have found that controlling a rebel teenager is a hard process that requires you to have a great deal of patience, a good technique and a lot of love.  But sometimes, these are not enough and your teen might choose to run away from home, and this is never a good thing.  When dealing with a defiant teen, there are certain aspects that you must consider as my professional experience has already taught me:

• § Be open, as this is the best way to find what lies behind a defiant teen’s choices and attitudes.
• § Try to consider any negative elements that might have determined him to consider running away from home.
• § Don’t set him unreasonable standards like excessive discipline; allow him/her to make mistakes and learn from them – this is the best way to grow up and become an adult.

   How should a parent react when their defiant teen takes over the house?  This is a question that I often have to answer and surprisingly, many parents do nothing as a response to that.  Yes, NOTHING!  Some of the parents think that they can happily avoid a headache instead of speaking up.  You can avoid your home becoming a verbal battlefield by following some simple steps:

1. Independence can be a positive thing, because many times, the outbursts of your teen don’t even make them feel like they are in control of the situation, in contrary.
2. Provide them with your parental guidance and the appropriate penalties, without creating a tensionate situation.  If you will organize the house and the responsibilities of each member of the family, including the defiant teen, than you can avoid the trouble.
3. Try to talk about ethical behavior and morals, while passing along your strong system of values.
4. Focus on the important things, instead of arguing with your teen about the torn jeans he decided to wear today.  If you make a fuss about such a small issue, think about the size of the scandal that could occur if you find out your teen has tried drugs.
5. Avoiding any arguments will cut off the fuel of your teen’s hostility.  You will see how good is the feeling of not trying to judge everything they do. Though, keep your right to disagree.

I have found that eating only a sugary snack can set me off on a roller coaster of high and low emotions and energy levels during the day.  l6 Get a treadmill. Stress releases hormones into your body that cause the Fight or Flight Syndrome. If you don’t want to fight and you can’t leave the house because of the kids, a treadmill gives your body a way of releasing the stress in a healthy manner. This also has the side benefit of making you stronger and better able to deal with the kids.  l7 Learn relaxing, stretching exercises like yoga or tai chi. These release the muscle knots in your body where you store tension. This also adds to your physical well being.  l8 Take deep breaths. They cause actual physical changes in your body to relax it.  9  Limit your expectations of what can get done in a day. The more hurried we are, the more likely we are to lash out.  10 lWrite to-do lists when the children are asleep. Your mind is more free to wander if you aren’t listening for suspicious noises or dealing with the current crisis.  11 lBreak chores down into tiny tasks. For example: gather the clothes, sort the clothes, put the detergent in the washer, and put the clothes in the washer. Our frustration builds when we are constantly interrupted. If you plan for interruptions you won’t be as stressed.  12 lAdd to the list during the day, whenever you see anything that needs to be done. It fools your mind into thinking you’ve actually done something about it, so it will stop nagging you about it.  13  Limit how much of the news you watch if it is upsetting to you. You do not need the added stress.  14 Read the newspaper. You can pick the news you read and the time when you will read it. Interruptions will not impede your ability to follow the story.  15 Get a TiVo or record your favorite shows as you watch them. You can then go back and catch up on what you missed when you are interrupted.  16 Write letters to God. Pour out all the anger, frustration, and negative emotions that you have toward Him and others. Ask for help; ask for forgiveness. Then tear the letter up.  17 Join autism chat rooms where you can talk to others in similar situations 18. Call old friends on the phone to stay connected to your emotional support system. Some of these friendships will taper off, but others will deepen.  19 lTake an interest in your friend’s lives. Do not just use them as a place to unload your stress.  20 lBe careful who you call when you are really upset; not everyone understands your situation. Make sure it is someone sympathetic and supportive.  21 lStep outside your house if you need a break but cannot leave. You can still hear everything that is going on in the house.  22 lTake your keys when you go outside. Children playing with the knob can accidentally lock it.  23 lView your children as gifts from God. They teach patience, kindness, and selflessness.

 v     Excerpts from the book The Importance of Outreach Many people are familiar with the parable of the ninety-nine sheep. The Good Shepherd has one hundred sheep and when he loses one, he leaves the other ninety-nine to go find the one that was lost. Well, I am going to tell you a parable of the stressed shepherd.  There once was a shepherd who had one hundred sheep. When one of them was missing, he knew it was the one with the black spot on his tail. He just wasn’t like the other sheep. Sheep naturally follow other sheep; the stressed shepherd figured this one must be deaf and he must be a loner. He didn’t seem to want to be near the other sheep.  So the next time the sheep with the black spot was missing, the stressed shepherd searched for a while and then returned to the flock. The shepherd had ninety-nine other sheep to tend. This one required more work than the other ninety-nine put together. It was not right to neglect them for this lamb who did not want to be a part of the flock anyway. This decision saddened the shepherd, but at the same time he felt a bit relieved.  Sometime later, a drought came upon the land. The shepherd’s usual sources of water dried up. The sheep were struggling and so was he. The shepherd cried out to God for help and a fat sheep appeared on a hilltop. The shepherd followed the sheep into a box canyon where water was springing from a rock and vegetation was flourishing around the spring.  As the shepherd thanked God for saving him and his flock, he noticed that the fat sheep had a black spot on his tail. He wept when he realized that if he had taken the time to rescue that sheep, he would have found the spring before the drought had begun. He and his flock would have had a secret source of strength to see them through the drought.  The moral of the story is that we need every person to be complete. Those who bring the most challenges can draw the best out of us. When people see what someone with disabilities is up against, their own burden seems lighter. They resolve to try a little harder. Sick children draw more love, compassion, and patience out of us than a hundred sermons. They are God’s powerful agents of change in the world today.  The families of children with developmental disabilities need the faith community around them, but there are many challenges. They are unable to bring their entire families to regular church functions because of their child’s anxiety or behavior issues. They can feel judged by others who think autism is a discipline problem. Many marriages are tested by the strain. These families need to hear that God loves them, and that His people are here to support them. Unfortunately, their isolation makes them nearly invisible to those around them and they often suffer alone.  If your heart is ready to reach out to these families, this book will tell you how to accomplish that. You and your faith community will find blessings and strength that will carry you through the hardest times. Your child will have a chance to explore the area with few social interactions and less sensory stimuli. After your child is comfortable at the playground, go at busier times.  [1] Use the little children’s swings to hold your child securely while he learns to hold on and gets used to the swinging sensation. When it is evident that he enjoys the swinging motion, move to the regular swings.  [1] Swing gently on the regular swings until your child consistently holds on.  [1] Teach the pumping motion when your child is still. Hold his legs out in front and say, “Front.” Push his legs back and say, “Back.”  [1] Demonstrate the pumping motion while saying, “Front” and “Back.”  [1] Push your child on the swings saying, “Front” and “Back.” The pumping motion takes a long time to learn, but persist, and make it fun.  [1] Stop the teaching exercise and swing as usual if your child gets stressed. The focus should be on his having fun outside the home.  [1] Go down a wide, straight slide with your child. Hold him between your legs and say, “That was fun!” Do this several times.  [1] Go down the slide first and then encourage your child to come to you.  [1] Start with a small slide. A child with autism goes down a ladder facing outward, which can be dangerous.  [1] Teach your child how to back down a ladder. Have a helper go up the ladder first and stop at the top. Your child will go up next. You stay behind your child. To start back down, pick up your child’s foot and put it on the lower bar. The helper should then back down also, forcing your child to descend. Praise your child with each step he retreats. Reward your child when he has reached the bottom.  [1] Do not go up the ladder if your child is descending facing outward. He may jump into your arms or hug you. This could tip you over backward. Stay at the bottom of the ladder with your feet firmly on the ground ready to catch your child should he fall.  [1] Remember what your child is wearing before you enter a fun fort. It is easy to lose a child in the wooden structures.  [1] Stay in visual contact with your child. Even if the playground has only one entrance, park benches are often placed against the walls. A child could easily exit without you knowing.  [1] Bring snacks and drinks for your child. Other children’s food is often in plain sight and can be a great temptation.
